The Copa Libertadores will make its way to Estadio Parque Artigas for the first time in 2023, where Boston River and Zamora FC will lock horns in the first leg of the first round of this famous competition. The hosts qualified in second place in Group B of the Uruguayan Premera Division behind Nacional, winning four of their seven group matches, along with one draw and two losses. Boston River had a relatively poor end to the domestic season last year, following up a fourth-place finish in the Apertura league with a seventh-place finish in the Clausura league, recording six wins, four draws, and five losses. Boston River played three friendly matches during the off-season, losing two on penalties and winning the other one 4-2 against Defensor Sporting. They’ve started this season well, with a 2-0 win over Racing CM, and having never competed in this competition, they will be looking to build on that form and cause a few upsets along the way.

Zamora kicked off their season in fine style, putting on a comprehensive display against Madeira Club Lara in the first match of the regular season. The visitors were Venezuelan Primera Division champions last season, recording 55 points in their 30 matches and finished the league two points ahead of Metropolitanos in second. Despite their excellent league finish, Zamora was the fourth and final qualifier for the Copa Libertadores, winning just one of their play-off matches, along with four draws and a loss. Zamora will want to improve on their previous performance in this tournament following a poor showing when they last competed in it. The last time Zamora competed in the Copa Libertadores was in 2019, they managed only one win in five matches. They will be meeting this opponent for the first time in cup competition and will want to take something away from this match for the return leg at home.
