Burnley and Brighton hope to start the season on a high to avoid the relegation scares that haunted them for the better part of last season. The two face off in the opening game of the season with Burnley hosting Brighton. Burnley’s poor start last season saw them register two points from their opening seven games, though they recovered and finished just above the relegation region with 39 points. They have a tough run of fixtures in the opening weeks and Sean Dyche will hope results come in early enough. They were not so active in the transfer window, only confirming Nathan Collins from Stoke City and veteran keeper Wayne Hennessey to provide cover for Nick Pope. Last season, just as they started poorly, their finish was poor, losing seven of their last nine matches. They did have a good preseason, winning five of their six matches. In their final preseason game, they lost 2-0 to Cadiz, the only of the six matches that they failed to score in. In four of the other six, they scored two or more goals. These two sides have drawn three of their last four matches and only three of their last 13 meetings have produced over 2.5 goals. Among teams that stayed up last season, Burnley were the side with the poorest attack, scoring just 33 goals in 38 matches.

Brighton haven’t had a very good run ahead of this game; in their two preseason matches, they registered a draw and a loss, and failed to score a goal. They wrapped up last season with a 2-0 loss to Arsenal so basically, they go into this fixture having failed to score in their last three matches. In the last 10 matches, they’ve scored in just four and in three of their last four, they’ve conceded two or more goals. Brighton have one clean sheet only in the last six matches. They wrapped up last season winless in their last five away matches, and having conceded in four of them. Having sold one of their best players, defender Ben White, leaves them exposed at the back. Davy Propper has also left for PSV but they’ve sealed the capture of Enock Mwepu, Kjell Scherpen and Jeremy Sarmiento.
