The two face off on Sunday, separated by two points and coming from midweek wins in the League Cup. Burnley are top of the standings with 38 points and Blackburn second with 36, each having played 20 matches. After a shock 5-2 loss to Sheffield United, Burnley recovered with a 3-1 win over Crawley Town in the League Cup and will hope to avoid defeat against another promotion contender. They have a good scoring run and that should be the biggest strength Burnley take into this game. However, they are the best to bank on defensively, having managed just one clean sheet in five matches. Both sides have scored in Burnley’s last four matches, and each of those games has produced over 2.5 goals. The last four matches have also produced over 2.5 goals, with Burnley scoring at least two in each. The hosts are on a good home run too, winning all of the last five matches there, and go into this one unbeaten in their 11 home games this season.
Blackburn Rovers’ top man this season, Ben Brereton scored a late equalizer that sent their game against West Ham United in the League Cup to post match penalties and Blackburn went on to win. The Championship side was courageous and it paid off away at West Ham. They will bank on such confidence going into this game and with only one loss in seven matches, Blackburn will feel this is an opportunity to go top of the standings. Blackburn have failed to score just once in their last five matches, in a 1-0 loss away to Coventry City, and that has been their only loss in the last seven matches. They have five wins in their last six matches in the Championship but their away run in the league isn’t as impressive. Blackburn have lost three of their last five matches in the league, and failed to score in all those losses. They’ve managed to score more than a goal in just one of their last five away matches.
