Semifinalist losers Burkina Faso and Ghana will face off in the third place playoffs of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Burkina Faso were eliminated by Egypt in a contested semifinal that saw them lose 4-3 in post-match penalties to Egypt. The match had ended on a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play forcing it to the round of penalties. Ghana on the other hand had to endure the humiliation of a 2-0 beating by fellow West Africans Cameroon. Until the semifinals, Ghana had gone through a neat set of matches that saw them win two and lose one of their group fixtures. In the quarterfinals, coach Avram Grant had to labour for a 2-1 victory over DR Congo, the team’s goals being scored by brothers Jordan and Andre Ayew, sons of the legendary Abedi Pele. Burkina Faso struggled through the group stage eventually progressing as the topmost team in their group, with one win and two draws. Surprisingly, Burkina Faso were better than finalists Cameroon in the group stage. In the quarter finals, the Burkinabe rose over Tunisia, beating them 2-0. There isn’t too much to gain from this match but the two sides will be looking to show the continent that they were only eliminated by bad luck and a win will send this message home.
