Bulgaria and Tanzania look to bounce from their recent disappointments and start their long-term planning with a friendly this week. This game at the neutral venue of Dalga Arena in Merdekan, Azerbaijan will be played on Friday. Bulgaria failed to qualify for the 2024 Euros to be held in Germany later this year after finishing bottom of Group G. They could only muster four points from their eight qualification matches, losing and drawing four games each. That left them out of Euros for a fifth consecutive tournament and without presence in the continental competition since 2004. The bigger worry is the fact that they couldn’t muster a win in that competition. Bulgaria are without a win in their last 11 matches in all competitions and friendlies, ahead of their first-ever match against Tanzania. Even considering friendlies, Bulgaria’s form hasn’t been up to par, with only one win from their last seven international friendlies. Four of those saw them lose, and worryingly, the last two without even scoring a goal.

Tanzania last played in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they finished bottom of Group F without a win and two draws to their name. The African side will look to build their way towards 2026 World Cup qualifiers, as they currently stand fourth in Group E of the qualification campaign. Four teams are tied on three points each after two matchdays in that group, leaving it open for them to move up. They have never qualified for a World Cup final proper and will have another friendly against Mongolia this month before the qualifying campaign re-starts in June. The challenge ahead of the African side is to find their scoring form, as they failed to score in four of their last five matches. In fact, their recent form doesn’t inspire confidence that they could challenge the Bulgarians here.
