Bristol City face Southampton on Tuesday on the back of a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside.  Jason Knight and Matty James handed City an early 2-0 lead in that game with two goals in the 16th and 17th minute meaning Sammy Silvera's 92nd minute goal for Middlesbrough was just a consolation. It was a tenacious performance from City, who had just 29% possession in the game but hung on for the win. It will be a boost for the team especially after going out of the FA Cup in midweek, losing their 4th Round replay on penalties to Nottingham Forest. City have landed some big wins this season, notably 4-1 successes over Plymouth and Watford, but their games tend to be lower scoring, although they do see both teams score relatively often. They'll need to as they face a Southampton team that boasts the longest unbeaten record in the Championship.

The Saints exciting 5-3 win over Huddersfield Town at the weekend wasn't just dramatic, with three goals in the last ten minutes of the game for the home team, it also preserved an unbeaten run that heralds back to the end of October, a run of 22 games without defeat. Russell Martin's team are now in second spot in the table, well above their opponents who lie 13th after their win at Middlesbrough at the weekend. They have an impressive goal tally of 60 goals in their 30 games, but have conceded 35 goals, that is the same amount as Bristol City who lie 11 places below them in the league table and who have also played a game more. The stats do seem to show that Southampton are a team willing to try and outscore an opponent, which makes this game one of the more exciting ones in the Championship this week.
