Tottenham Hotspur were completely outplayed in midweek by Bayern Munich in the Champions League and they had to deal with another loss, extending the poor start they have had to their season and with the loss they have now won just once in their last five matches and thrice in a run of 10 matches. It was also their third loss in the season, while they were also earlier eliminated from the League Cup on post match penalties by Colchester United. They have been very poor defensively in the season, keeping just two clean sheets in the 10 matches so far while in the Premier League they have one clean sheet in the last 10 matches, but they have failed to score in just three of their last 15 league matches. Spurs are winless in their last nine away matches in the Premier League, losing seven of those, and they have conceded twice in each of the last three and seven of the last nine. Their last two away wins in the league came against sides relegated last season – Fulham and Cardiff City, but this season they have scored twice and picked two points at Manchester City and Arsenal.

In this game, Spurs will miss the services of defender Serge Aurier, who was sent off in the team’s last match. While Spurs have had a poor run in the season, Brighton are not in a much better state. They have no win in their last five matches while in the nine they have played, they have managed just two wins, only one in the league so far. In the last 16 Premier League matches, Brighton have managed just one win, and this came against the bottom side in the league, Watford, at the start of the season. They are winless in the last eight home league matches and have managed just two wins in 15 league matches at home.
