It was a game that was closer than what the final scoreline suggests, but the Seagulls were always the better team on the day. Goals from Mitoma, Welbeck, and Adingra were enough to win the match. Brighton also had a numerical advantage for nearly 30 minutes, with Ashley Young sent off just after the hour mark.

The only loss in that sequence came when the sides met at this venue in the last match of the previous campaign. United are perhaps slightly better than the mess they were last season, but a scrappy 1-0 matchday one win doesn’t inspire much confidence.
The Red Devils generated a number of chances, but the usual problem of failing to convert those chances flared up. One positive is the performance of their midfield, as Mason Mount backtracked off the ball and Casemiro rolled back the years to provide an attacking outlet. New signing Joshua Zirkzee proved that he can be an attacker for the future with a timely goal.
That 1-0 win over Fulham made it three league wins in a row for United, going back to the previous campaign. The win over Brighton at this venue last season was an exception of sorts though, as the Red Devils had failed to win five matches away from home prior to that.
