The highly-anticipated English Premier League will get underway this weekend, and Brighton will be aiming to get off to a winning start when they play host to Luton Town. The hosts ended last season in sixth place, while the visitors secured promotion for the first time in their history though they have previously been in the old First Division. Brighton were arguably the biggest surprise package of the 2022-23 English Premier League season, as they moved up three places from the previous season to earn a coveted Europa League qualification spot. They managed a total of 62 points, just five behind Liverpool in fifth and nine off the top four. Their performance last season looks all the more impressive when considering that they finished ahead of two big six sides, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. The Seagulls recorded 18 wins, eight draws, and 12 losses in their 38 matches and also made it to the quarter-final of the FA Cup, where they were beaten on penalties by Manchester United. Roberto De Zerbi has made a few key signings over the summer break, most notably the acquisition of ex-Watford frontman Joao Pedro, who will be hoping to make an instant impact in his return to the top flight. The hosts are expected to have a very good season and are heavily backed to start with a win in this one. 

Fair to say that the past few years have been an absolute roller coaster for Luton. From dropping all the way fown from the top flight to non-league football. to their meteoric rise since. They will now participate in the Premier League for the first time in their history and will be looking to defy the odds, as they are currently the favorites to be relegated at the end of this season. Luton finished last season third in the Championship behind runaway leaders Burnley and Sheffield United. They managed 80 points in their 46 matches and went on to beat Coventry 6-5 on penalties in the playoff final. The Hatter's biggest strength last term was their defence, which maintained the joint-second-best record of 39 goals conceded, which was only four more than Burnley let in. Luton ended the regular season unbeaten in their last 14 matches before the playoffs, including eight wins and six draws. The visitors have also made a few notable signings in the summer, bringing in Premier League talents like Ross Barkley and Marvelous Nakamba, as well as a few bright youngsters in Tahith Chong and Ryan Giles. While they are not expected to set the league alight, Rob Edwards will be looking for a positive performance by his side, which will give them something to build on as the season progresses.
