Brentford will host Tottenham Hotspur in their opening game of the Premier League this season. A London derby that is likely to be overshadowed by key players’ futures will have both sides seeking a strong start. The home team is coming from a preseason run that failed to produce a win in five matches. Three draws and two losses may leave questions on their readiness for the season. At least they finished with a clean sheet, drawing 0-0 with Lille. That should count as a positive after conceding two or more goals in the earlier three. The Bees however closed the Premier League season last term with three straight wins. Brentford did well in London derbies last season and can build on that here. In their last game against Tottenham, they came from behind to win 3-1. That was their third unbeaten game against Spurs; the earlier two ended in draws. Coming into this game, Brentford will not be with a few key players. Goalkeeper David Raya is on his way out while star striker Ivan Toney is still months away from completing his suspension.

Tottenham Hotspur have a new manager in Ange Postecoglou who has done well in previous jobs in Japan and Scotland. The Australian has clearly stared he wants to bring the winning mentality to the North London club. However, he may have to do it without the club’s legendary forward, Harry Kane, who is edging towards a move to Bayern Munich. With five goals in four preseason matches, Harry Kane gave the new manager a glimpse of what he can offer. The north London side must however look beyond the England skipper now, and they have exciting new arrivals. James Maddison was signed from Leicester City and Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli and both will be starting. For another new man, Micky van de Ven this match comes too soon. Spurs were free-scoring in preseason, managing 14 goals in four matches and they will need that here. However, they conceded nine times, and that will be a concern for the manager. They didn’t close last season on a high, losing five of the final eight league games. Spurs managed just three wins in their final 11 league matches.
