Brazil vs Argentina Prediction & Betting Tips - World Cup
by Joseph King in World Cup Predictions
One of football’s greatest rivalries is renewed on Tuesday as Brazil and Argentina face off for matchday six in CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 qualifying. Brazil are going through a bumpy patch and sit fifth in the standings while defending champions Argentina lead the group. The expanded format of the upcoming World Cup means that six of the 10 competing nations in the region will automatically punch their tickets to USA - Mexico - Canada. Seventh-place, meanwhile, enters into an intercontinental playoff to determine their fate. This is up from the 2022 World Cup qualifying which saw four teams automatically qualify and fifth-place participating in the playoff.

Brazil - Argentina: Form Analysis
It’s been a year to forget for Brazil as they gear up for their last match of 2023. Not since 1966, where they played three total games, has Brazil finished a calendar year with more losses than wins. They’re currently facing that prospect as they take on their bitter rivals and world champions in Rio. The Selecao Canarinha have managed a record of just 3-1-4 in their eight matches in 2023 so far. They squandered a 1-0 lead in Barranquilla against Colombia in their most recent outing, conceding twice in the final 15 minutes to lose 2-1 and be resigned to their second straight defeat. The wheels have come off after a perfect two wins from two to start the qualifying campaign. Brazil is currently on a three game winless streak, the longest they’ve gone without a victory since 2019.
Argentina finally saw their lengthy winning streak brought to an end in their most recent match, a 2-0 home loss to Uruguay. The Argentines had previously won eight in a row since lifting the World Cup trophy. What’s more, the Albiceleste kept a clean sheet in all eight of those games while outscoring their opponents by a combined 20-0. They currently sit first in the qualifying table with a record of 4-0-1 for a total of 12 points, giving them a two-point lead over Uruguay in second. Argentina would love to inflict further misery on their rivals with a win here as they attempt to bounce back following their heated loss on Thursday.

Brazil & Argentina Squad Analysis
Brazil have a number of key players missing, none perhaps greater than captain and leading goalscorer Neymar. The Al-Hilal man suffered a ruptured ACL in a 2-0 loss to Uruguay in October, a serious injury which is going to keep him out of commission for a long time. With Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. pulling a hamstring in the previous match, manager Fernando Diniz is left short of attacking options. Richarlison is unavailable so he might call upon either Gabriel Martinelli to lead the line or give another opportunity to Brighton’s Joao Pedro. Brazil will also be without the services of Casemiro, Eder Militao, Ederson and Danilo.
Argentina are operating with an almost completely healthy squad with defender Lisandro Martinez the only notable absence. After failing to score for the first time in two years, manager Lionel Scaloni is expected to make a slight tweak to his forward line by bringing Lautaro Martinez back into the starting 11. The Inter Milan man was introduced at half time in the loss to Uruguay but will surely lead the line here with Alvarez likely shifting out to the right wing. Lionel Messi will captain the side and is set to make his 180th appearance for his country.
