Botafogo welcome Club Guarani to the Olympic Stadium in Rio di Janeiro on late Wednesday as the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 kicks off. This is the first leg of this two-legged tie with the winner going on to play the winner of Emelec vs Defensa y Justicia in the quarter-finals. Botafogo are coming off a 4-1 win over Coritiba in the Brazilian Serie A. They are flying in the league with 43 points from 17 matches and a comfortable 12-point cushion at the top. They would be keen to address their continental aspirations which began in the group stage this season. After finishing second behind LDU Quito in Group A, Botafogo went past Patronato in the knockout round playoffs by 3-1 on aggregate. The hosts are unbeaten as yet in this competition this year, but have drawn five and won only three.

Guarani started in the first stage of the competition defeating Sportivo Ameliano 3-1 to progress to the group stage. They then topped Group B with 11 points from three wins and two draws, to qualify directly to the round of 16. The Paraguayan visitors are coming off a 1-1 draw in the domestic league. That result made it three wins and two draws from their last six competitive matches. The visitors have been steady without being spectacular in the Copa Sudamericana too, winning three and drawing two of their last five matches. In fact, they have lost only once in this competition this season, but that has come on the road in the group stage.
