Borussia Dortmund will switch gears to domestic action when they host Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Heading into this game, a slot in the Champions League is locked for Dortmund, while Augsburg are pushing for a place in Europe. Dortmund earned Germany a fifth slot in the Champions League with their 1-0 win over PSG in their last outing. With a place in the Champions League secure, they won’t even mind finishing outside the top four. As a result, and with a tough away game to PSG in the horizon, Dortmund will want to rest players here. Niklas Fullkrug’s first half goal ensured Dortmund take charge of their semi-final Champions League tie against PSG. The win ended their run of back-to-back winless outings and also handed them a first clean sheet in seven matches. Dortmund have one win only in their last four league matches and it is the same at home in the Bundesliga. With more importance now attached to their Champions League campaign, it won’t be a surprise if Dortmund fail to improve on this run. However, they remain favorites, having avoided defeat against Augsburg in the last six meetings.

Augsburg forced a 1-1 draw in their first meeting of the season against Dortmund. That result stopped Dortmund from winning a third straight game against them. However, Augsburg are still winless in six meetings with Dortmund. As they need to keep their hopes for Europe alive, we expect Augsburg to give a bigger effort here. Somehow, they’ll have to find their confidence, which is surely eroded after losing three of their last four matches. In each of those defeats, they conceded three goals, most recently falling 3-0 at home to Werder Bremen. April wasn’t a great month for them, as they saw their five-game unbeaten run come to an end. Fuggerstädter will be here gunning for a better start to the month, and strong finish to the season. Four wins only in their away league matches this season will not pass as a motivating factor coming here. Augsburg will however take inspiration in having only failed to score in one of their last seven away league matches.
