Bolton Wanderers host Barnsley in the first leg of this League One play-off semi-final. Awaiting the winners in the Wembley final are either Peterborough United or Sheffield Wednesday. The home side finished fifth in League One, a place and five points behind their opponents. Bolton nearly went out of business a few seasons ago and ended up being relegated to League Two. Now they are back in League One and only three games away from a return to the Championship. They ended the main season in better form than Barnsley. Bolton only lost one of their last ten league games and won three of the last four to secure their place in the play-offs. Home form saw them win 14 of their 23 league games Just two of their last 14 home League One games have been lost.

Barnsley ended the main season 12 points behind the top two. They had got a lot closer after an impressive run of form, especially on home soil with some big wins over top sides. Their form has dipped of late though ending their hopes of automatic promotion. The main season ended with a 2-0 home loss to Peterborough United who they could meet in the play-off final.
