It was an up and down campaign for Bologna last season. They struggled early on but a form guide for the last 15 games of the season had them in seventh place. Bologna eventually finished tenth in the table after just two losses in their last 12 league games. That was a massive improvement after winning just two of their first 19 league games and battling relegation. It was home form that got them out of trouble. Two wins in 12 was followed by them winning their last seven home league games scoring 20 goals and conceding just five. Their first game of this new Serie A season saw them travel to Verona. They came away with a 1-1 draw but might have been disappointed by that. Their opponents played 77 minutes with ten men and Bologna had taken the lead after a quarter of an hour.

SPAL finished 13th in the league last season with 11 wins but 18 defeats and a -12 goal difference. They had a disappointing end to the season losing their last three games of the campaign. 11 of their 17 away games ended in defeat in Serie A last season. SPAL won two of their last three away league matches but both were against relegated sides. They will really be kicking themselves for not beginning the new season with a home win.
