A crucial upper-half battle in the Serie A is set to play out this week when Bologna play host to Atalanta on Saturday. The hosts are currently fourth in the league standings, while the visitors are seventh. Bologna have been much improved this season. They head into this encounter with 28 points already under their belts after 16 matches. That tally sees them occupying the fourth and final Champions League berth for now, while they are four points behind AC Milan in third. The Red and Blues will be in fine spirits here, having secured a quarter-final spot in the Coppa Italia by beating Inter Milan 2-1 in midweek. That result extended their excellent recent record to five matches unbeaten in all competitions while only conceding one loss in their last 17. The hosts have also lost just one game at home this season and are on a five-match winning streak at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara. Bologna won the last meeting 2-0 and are the clear favourites in this one. 

Meanwhile, Atalanta have experienced a slight dip in form this season, currently sitting two places outside the European qualification spots. They have taken 26 points to date, but with the upper-mid table still very compact, they are just two points behind the top four after 16 games. La Dea cruised past bottom club Salernitana 4-1 in their last match, marking their third consecutive win in all competitions. That result followed a 4-0 victory over Rakow Czestochowa in the Europa League and saw them clinch the top spot in Group D of the competition. Much of Atalanta’s difficulties have come on the road this season. In eight away league games, they have won just three and come into this match winless in their last two. Still, the visitors are the third-highest-scoring team in the division this season and cannot be ruled out of this contest just yet.
