VFL Bochum will play host to Freiburg in their next Bundesliga assignment set for this Sunday. Freiburg will start this game as favorites, placed ninth, six places ahead of their hosts. Bochum are a place above the relegation playoff zone, after garnering 25 points off their 24 matches. They are under no immediate threat of dropping into the relegation zone, being eight points above. However, widening that gap remains a priority and a win here could see them leap three places up. Straight losses in the last two matches have hampered their ambitions and Bochum will be keen to bounce back. After a famous home win over Bayern Munich, Bochum have registered straight defeats, against Borussia Monchengladbach and most recently, Leipzig. An inconsistent run that has just a win in six matches is just one part of their concern. The other is the fact that Bochum have conceded 11 goals in just the last three games. In their eight league matches in 2024, Bochum have managed just one clean sheet. They do have a good league run at home though, losing just once in nine, and winning four of seven.

Freiburg have so far balanced well their assignments in Europe and domestically. They are gunning for a place in the Europa League quarters, but also playing for continental football next season. Sitting ninth with 30 points, they are seven below sixth spot and will need to inject some consistency in their game. This isn’t a fixture expected to trouble them, and the visitors should enter the game as favorites. They have five straight wins over Bochum coming into this game. The last four of them were in the Bundesliga and Freiburg won three without conceding. The first meeting between these two this season ended in a 2-1 win for Freiburg after coming from a goal down. Michael Gregoritsch, who has been in fine form lately, scored their only goal in the 1-0 win over West Ham in the Europa League. Coming from that win, Freiburg have a starting point to build from, having lost just once in six matches. It was a rather unusual spectacle seeing just one goal in the game as Freiburg have been in many high-scoring matches. Eight of the nine matches coming before the West Ham win produced at least three goals. Freiburg will not be concerned much about that as long as they can bag three points. Getting three points away from home has proven challenging in recent times though. In their last six away matches, Freiburg haven't managed a win, losing five.
