Both Bloemfontein Celtic and Orlando Pirates will go to Round 3 of the Premier Soccer League searching for their opening wins of the season. Celtic hosts Pirates at the Petrus Molemela Stadium on Wednesday with just a point separating them. Hosts Celtic have a point from their opening two matches and are placed 13th while Pirates have two points and in ninth place. Last season, Celtic had a fairly good run, finishing in the top eight to secure a place in the MTN8 Cup and also got to the cup final, though narrowly lost to Mamelodi Sundwons. They got their perfect revenge in their opening game of this season, beating Sundowns in the MTN8 Cup, but have not been able to replicate this in the league. In their opening two league games, they started with a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows before losing 1-0 to Swallows in their most recent match. In the loss to Swallows, they were eight minutes from a clean sheet and a draw, but Ronald Pfumbidzai scored an own goal just 10 minutes after receiving a booking on a tough afternoon for the defender. Pirates on their part, have no weekend activity, with their MTN8 Cup semi final, second leg clash against Kaizer Chiefs scheduled for next weekend. The away team will go to this clash on a high, coming from a surprise 3-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the opening leg of their cup semi final. However, they have struggled to replicate their MTN8 Cup form in the league, drawing 1-1 with Amazulu and Stellenbosch in their opening two matches. On a positive outlook, Pirates are unbeaten in their opening four matches of the season and stretching back to last season, it is seven straight matches unbeaten. In their last 12 matches, actually, they have one loss, which came in August after going on a run of four straight draws. They found their claws thereafter and the complete dominance and win over Chiefs on Saturday is a statement of their intent. The last six matches have come with four clean sheets for Pirates and they have scored in each of the last seven matches. Twice in the last seven matches they have been able to score two or more. With an extra day to rest before facing Celtic, Pirates will have the favorites’ feel and carrying a three-match unbeaten run against Celtic will further boost them psychologically. In the last six meetings between these two sides, Celtic have one win and Pirates three. In the last seven, only two have produced over 2.5 goals.
