It’s the battle of the two basement clubs in the Championship as Blackpool and Wigan, separated by just a point at the bottom, meet on Saturday. The hosts are 23rd and are still seven points adrift of safety with five matches to go while the visitors are 24th and eight points from escaping the bottom three. After Mick McCarthy left by mutual consent, Blackpool didn’t see their fortunes change as they lost 3-1 at Luton. That made it four straight losses in the Championship, each time conceding at least three goals. Their defensive struggles are well documents with no side conceding more goals than Blackpool’s 67. Their overall struggles aren’t replicated at home with Blackpool losing only two of their last eight league matches at this venue – winning two and drawing four.

Wigan are no better than their hosts losing their last two matches without scoring. The Latics have won just once across their last 11 league games, losing five and drawing five which is relegation worthy form. It is their lack of goals that has troubled Wigan through the season with only Cardiff scoring fewer goals than their 34. If there is a slight ray of hope based on their ability to draw games recently, that would be snuffed by a look at their away form. Wigan haven’t won any of their last 15 away league matches, drawing six and losing nine. That included four defeats across their last five away matches which could come back to hurt them.
