The English Championship is back in action after the World Cup break with third-place taking on ninth-place when Blackburn Rovers host Preston North End at Ewood Park for this Saturday fixture. The home team have been exceeding expectations this year and have won 12 of their 21 games so far on the year, putting them on 36 points – two behind Sheffield United and five points behind leaders Burnley. Blackburn suffered a loss in their final match before the break, falling 3-0 away from home to the league leaders in what was a disappointing performance. Since then, the Riversiders have won both of their friendly matches in the interim including an impressive 2-0 win over Ajax, albeit against a heavily rotated squad.
Preston North End come into this match having won eight of their 21 matches, drawn seven and lost six, putting them on 31 points – even with sixth-place QPR who they will hope to jump ahead of with a positive result today. The Lilywhites lost their match before the break 4-2 to Millwall, snapping a previous four match winning streak. Preston will be confident ahead of this match given their strong away form so far on the year, winning five of their 10 trips along with three draws and two defeats. Preston’s last away match was a 2-1 victory over Reading and they’ve now won two of their last three away.
Blackburn’s young side have been having a very strong season as they seek promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since the 2011/12 season. Led on by Ben Brereton-Diaz, the league’s co-leading scorer with nine strikes, Blackburn have built their promotion challenge off the back of their impressive home form. The Riversiders have won eight of their 10 matches on their own patch this season, giving them the second best home record in the league at 24 points from 10 matches.

Blackburn opting to take part in two friendlies as the World Cup break was winding down could well make the difference in this match. They were able to get a number of their first team starters a run out while banging in six total goals to build some momentum. Preston, on the other hand, opted to not play any friendlies and could very well take a while to get back up to speed after the lengthy rest.
