Gameweek nine in the Primeira Liga will see Benfica playing host to Rio Ave on Sunday evening. As Aguias are in third place in the league standings, while Vilacondenses are in 12th after the first eight games of the season. Let’s get into the match prediction.

After an unexpected opening day loss to Famalicao, Benfica have refound their Primeira Liga form and are set to enter this weekend’s round of matches unbeaten in their last six games. 

Their most recent league match ended in a thumping 5-1 win over Gil Vicente, marking their third victory on the bounce before suffering defeat to Feyenoord in the Champions League in midweek. 

At home, though, As Aguias have been perfect this term with four wins in four. They have now won 15 straight home games in the top flight and are unbeaten in their last 24.

Meanwhile, Rio Ave could do with a positive result here, as they have failed to win any of their last four league matches, losing two and drawing two. 

Vilacondenses’ last victory in the league was at the start of September against Arouca and that was their second for the season having beaten Farense on matchday two. 

Notably, though, both the visitors’ wins this term were at home, while on the road they have not tasted success since March 2023 - a winless run of 25 consecutive matches.
