Belgium vs Slovakia Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro
by Ian John in Euro Predictions
The second game in Group E on Monday kicks off at 5 pm UK Time and will see the much-fancied Belgium take on Slovakia.
Domenico Tedesco’s squad retains a vastly experienced core of players from Belgium’s golden generation. Including Jan Vertonghen, Kevin De Bruyne, Yannick Carrasco, Axel Witsel and Romelu Lukaku, alongside a group of talented younger players breaking into the national squad.
They will start as strong favourites against a Slovakia team that lacks the star names of their opponents, but who can call on Paris St. Germain defender Milan Skriniar and Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka. Francesco Calzona will be hoping his team can produce a shock to earn something from this opening fixture.

Belgium - Slovakia: Form Analysis
Belgium’s recent form has been rock solid. They have won eight and drawn five of their last 13 matches and won their qualifying group. Domenico Tedesco’s squad comprises a nice blend of youth and experience, with the likes of Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne and record national team goalscorer Romelu Lukaku still producing top-level performances at this level.
Belgian fans are unsure whether the quality will remain beyond this group of experienced players. The next generation of Belgian players doesn’t seem as talented as the most recent. As such, this may be the last chance for Belgium’s self-proclaimed “Golden Generation” to win a major trophy.
In their four warm-up games, Belgium drew 0-0 in Ireland with the Republic and then drew 2-2 at Wembley against England. However, in their most recent warm-up fixtures, they comfortably beat Montenegro 2-0 and, most recently, Luxembourg 3-0.
Slovakia manager Francesco Calzona can be rightly pleased with how his team qualified for the finals, finishing second to Portugal in Group J. They have won an impressive eight of their last dozen games, albeit mostly against teams ranked in the middle-to-lower places in the FIFA rankings.
Calzona made a big call ahead of the tournament, leaving their most experienced striker Robert Mak out of the squad. PSG defender Milan Skriniar is captain, and he and Napoli anchorman Stanislav Lobotka form the team's foundation. Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is the first choice in goal. Winger Leo Sauer (18), who had a breakthrough season at Feyenoord, is one to watch.
After losing 2-0 to Austria and then drawing 1-1 with Norway in March, Slovakia bounced back to record two 4-0 wins in their final two Euro 2024 warm-up fixtures, beating San Marino in Austria and then Wales at home in their last friendly fixture.

Belgium & Slovakia Squad Analysis
Belgium boss Tedesco elected to leave Thibaut Courtois out of his squad for the finals, which means that Koen Casteels will likely start in goal. A strong spine of players will likely include the likes of Axel Witsel, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
The competition for places in other areas of the team is fierce, with every player vying for a spot. An injury to right wingback Thomas Meunier could potentially open the door for Fulham's Timothy Castagne to make a start. For the coveted left wing spot in Tedesco's likely 3-4-3 formation, the choices are Arsenal's Leandro Trossard and Manchester City's Jeremy Doku.
Defenders Jan Vertonghen and Arthur Teate are carrying knocks and not likely to be in consideration for this opening fixture. Charles De Ketelaer, who had a fine season on loan at Europa League Champions Atalanta (from Inter Milan) could be one of the surprise stars of the tournament for Belgium.
Rather like Belgium, Slovakia boss Calzona will likely utilise experience down the spine of his team. Dubravka will get the nod in goal, with Skriniar (29) and Peter Pekarik (37) likely to be key in defence. Juraj Kucka (37) and Ondrej Duda and Stanislav Lobotka (both 29) will form a key trio in midfield in a likely 4-3-3 formation.
However, Slovakia may have a youthful look in attack with Boavista striker Robert Bozenik expected to be the main central striker with Tomas Suslov and Lukas Haraslin providing the wide attacking threat, although Leo Sauer could be an option from the bench.

Our Belgium vs Slovakia Prediction
Our prediction for the Belgium v Slovakia Group E Euro 2024 clash is for Belgium to win the game. Domenico Tedesco's team are still ranked third in the world in the FIFA rankings and qualified as winners of Group F ahead of Austria and Sweden. Slovakia, in comparison, are ranked 48th and qualified as runner up in Group J, eight points behind Portugal.
Many experts feel that this is the last major tournament for this golden generation of Belgian players and having been drawn in one of the easier of the Euro 2024 finals groups, I would expect the top seeds to make a very solid start to their campaign here.
Belgium vs Slovakia - Other Interesting Predictions
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) to score at any time
Belgium's in form striker Romelu Lukaku may have questions about where his club future lies, but he is the focal point of the Belgian attack. The striker spent the year on loan at AS Roma, from Chelsea, and has netted a hugely impressive 13 goals in his last 12 games for Belgium.
Aged just 31, he has amassed 115 caps for Belgium and has scored an incredible 85 goals in those games. With Belgium likely to be the team to beat in Group E, he looks a good bet to be amongst the goals in their opening game.
Our secondary bet therefore is for Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) to score at any time.
Over 2.5 Goals to be Scored
Four of Slovakia's last six games have seen over 2.5 goals scored, while for Belgium, three of their last five games have also seen over 2.5 goals scored. The last game between the two teams finished as a 2-1 win for Belgium.
There is also the fact that Belgium are one of the most creative teams in the competition, certainly with one of the best midfield units, and with Romelu Lukaku up front, goalscoring should not be a problem for the team.
As such, our other secondary prediction is for over 2.5 goals to be scored in the game.
