German giants Bayern Munich showed their finesse in their away match at Lazio in the Champions League and will be gunning for the same when they resume Bundesliga action. A home game against Cologne is next in their roster and opening up a gap at the top is their main agenda. Bayern are at the summit of the Bundesliga standings with 49 points while Cologne are 14th with 21 points. The champions struggled a bit upon their return from the Club World Cup, drawing 3-3 with Arminia Bielefeld before losing 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt. However, a 4-1 win at Lazio was a stark reminder of the class they still hold, though after the last two league matches, their lead has been trimmed to just two points. Bayern’s biggest threat in the season is in their attack, however, the greatest concern lies in the defence. The giants have conceded the joint most goals in the top seven of the Bundesliga at the moment. They have conceded in nine of the last 15 matches across all competitions. Cologne didn’t have a midweek fixture and should be well rested for this game, as they look to rise further away from the relegation region. They have no clean sheet in seven matches, and just one in 10, while they’ve failed to score in six of the 10 a very bad stat, heading to a clash with the league leaders. In Bundesliga alone, Cologne have failed to score in seven of the last 10 matches. This season, in the 11 away league matches, they’ve managed just four wins, and have three losses in the last five. Four of their last five away league matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Cologne have not only lost each of their last six matches against Bayern, they haven’t beaten Bayern Munich in 13 straight meetings.
