After a triumphant outing in Europe, Bayern Munich will be back in Bundesliga action, hosting Mainz in their next outing. Things aren’t as great in Bundesliga for Bayern; they are second, heading into this game against 17th placed Mainz. This isn’t a game Bayern have been entirely comfortable in. They’ve lost three of their last six league meetings with Mainz. However, all those losses occurred when the Bavarians played away from home. There will thus be a reason to stay positive as they head into this game, six straight home wins over Mainz. A 2-2 draw away to Freiburg last weekend left Bayern Munich on 54 points, 10 adrift of league leaders Leverkusen. The champions, whose dominance has come under threat in the last two seasons, now look like they’ll be dethroned. There is still a lot to play for and this is a game Thomas Tuchel’s side has to win. In their last outing, they thrashed Lazio 3-0 in the Champions League. They will seek to build on this momentum as they take on Mainz.

Mainz have given Bayern Munich a few uncomfortable moments in the recent past. That however didn’t happen in their first meeting this season, falling 3-1 at home. With just a win in their last 14 matches, Mainz are in for a tough encounter on their trip to Munich. They did well to hold on for a point in a 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach last time out. That was despite playing with a man down after Dominik Kohr’s 83rd minute red card. The performance was a marked improvement after a 2-1 loss away to Bayer Leverkusen. Going into this game, Mainz are nine points below the safe zone. They thus need three points as much as Bayern Munich do. Their away form may however work against them here, coming on a run of three straight defeats on the road. Mainz have no win in 13 away matches in all competitions. While this has always proven a tough game for Mainz, they’ll find solace in having scored in six of the last seven meetings.
