Not a win, but it will do. Bayer Leverkusen managed to gain points for just the second time this season, clinching an away draw against Hertha yet showing resilience after being 2-1 down. It still does not manage to erase their bad form, with head coach Seoane undoubtedly in the hot seat at the moment. The cause: Leverkusen have just won one of their eight competitive games this season, losing six of them. They have also displayed dismal defensive showings, keeping just one clean sheet in that run, and conceding nine goals in their last five games. They will get a sense of deja-vu playing against Simeone’s side, against whom they have faced off four times in the past five years, winning just once. Atletico Madrid are truly up and running. After their thriller win in midweek which saw three goals scored in added time to overcome Porto’s obstacle, their win was much more convincing in the weekend, brushing aside Celta in a 4-1 home win. The Madrid side are now four games unbeaten, while they have only lost once in their last fourteen, a sign of their resilient nature. They also tend to perform efficiently on the road, winning seven and drawing one of their last eight outings.

Leverkusen are always a better side when Czech ace Patrick Schick is delivering the goods, and he did so this time again, scoring for the second time in three games. Demirbay also had a good game and Leverkusen should be pumped by the news having star youngster Florian Wirtz closing in on a return to full training after a lengthy injury. The likes of Lunev, Adli and Bellarabi are out injured and won’t feature in this one. With regards to Simeone’s side, it was nice for Antoine Griezmann to not have to rescue his team as a super sub this time, with both Carrasco and De Paul having great games and getting on the score sheet as well. Atletico are still without the services of Savic, Jimenez and Reguilon, but with Reinildo not having missed a game this season, Atletico are safe at the back for now.
