AZ Alkmaar vs West Ham Prediction & Betting Tips - Conference League
by Joseph King | in Conference League Predictions
AZ host West Ham United in the second leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final. The Dutch side trail 2-1 from the first leg played in London last week. The winners will take on either Basel or Fiorentina in the final with the Swiss club 2-1 up after the away leg. AZ took the lead in the first leg of this semi-final. However, they could not hold onto their lead and eventually returned home the losers. It's a slender lead though and with their excellent home form they still have a good chance of progressing. Doing so will see them in their first European final since the 1980/81 UEFA Cup (now the Europa League). On that occasion they lost to another English side, Ipswich Town. AZ are fourth in the Dutch Eredvisie at present and just two points behind Ajax and the Europa League spot. Another season in this competition is likely unless winning it this year or catching Ajax.
West Ham United have had a Jekyll and Hyde season for sure. They have been struggling against relegation from the Premier League for most of the campaiign. However, in the Europa Conference League they have won eleven and drawn one. United have actually won more games in this competition than in the Premier League. Recent months have seen improvement though. Barring two massive Leeds United wins, 15th placed West Ham are guaranteed another season in the English top-flight but need to do better. The Hammers are unbeaten in the Europa Conference League this season. Maintaining that record will see them in the final and repeat the heartbreak of last season's Europa League semi-final loss. Dealing with the impressive home record that AZ possess isn't going to be an easy task though.

AZ Alkmaar - West Ham: Form Analysis
In the Eredivisie, AZ's home form has been fairly strong with nine wins and only two defeats. However, it is in the Europa Conference League where their home results have really stood out. AZ Alkmaar are a perfect eight wins from eight at the AFAS Stadion when including the three Conference League qualifying ties that they played. Yes it's been a really long season for them in this competition. During these eight games, AZ have scored a total of 25 goals and have conceded just five. In fact, the hosts have scored at least two goals in all but one of their home games in this competition so far.The last 16 saw them beat Serie A side Lazio on home soil. In the quarter finals, they had to go to a penalty shootout to get past Anderlecht. The away leg had been lost 2-0 but they won the home second leg by the same scoreline. They come into this match in good form as well, blasting five goals past Emmen on Saturday in a 5-1 home victory. That's ten goals in their last three home fixtures. Only one of their last nine home games has been lost, so the Hammers have a tough task here.
West Ham were unable to continue forward with the positive momentum provided by the first leg victory, losing 2-0 at Brentford on Saturday. Their away form in Europe this season is far better than in the Premier League. They won five in a row on the road in the Europa Conference League before a draw in Gent. That's compared to just three away wins in 18 games in the Premier League and 12 defeats. Their defence may well struggle to cope with AZ on Thursday. Nine goals have been conceded in their last three games on the road. All were in the Premier League but in this competition they have three clean sheets in the last four. Another Jekyll and Hyde example there. The first goal in this match is going to be so vital.

AZ Alkmaar & West Ham Squad Analysis
AZ boss Pascal Jansen was unable to usher in wholesale changes to his team as they are battling Ajax for third-place in the league standings. The 50-year-old manager made just two changes from the side that started the match in the first leg against West Ham. With a five goal lead at half-time in the win over Emmen, Jansen was able to get his star players some rest midway through the second half. Expect to see a similar starting lineup in this match with the additions of left back Milos Kerkez and Swedish winger Jesper Karlsson. Kerkez missed the first leg due to suspension while starlet Karlsson is freshly back from injury, playing 25 minutes on the weekend.
West Ham manager David Moyes opted to heavily rotate his squad in the weekend loss to Brentford. No fewer than nine changes were made from the starting 11 that faced off against AZ at the London Stadium last Thursday. Expect a return to the starting lineup for striker Michail Antonio who has six goals in seven Conference League matches so far. He'll be supported by Lucas Paqueta in the number10 position with Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrhama flanking on the wings. Captain Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek will act as the holding midfielders and we should also see a backline of Cresswell, Aguerd, Zouma and Kehrer take the field. Alphonse Areola is also set to take over for Lukasz Fabianksi in goal. He's been their regular goalie in this Europa Conference League.

Our AZ Alkmaar vs West Ham Prediction
AZ Alkmaar have proven throughout this competition that they are a force to be reckoned with when playing on their home pitch. Doubters need only look to performances such as their 2-1 home victory against high-level defensive side Lazio in the round of 16 and a 7-0 thrashing of Dundee United in the qualifying rounds. While we certainly think AZ can put up a few here, we are also still wary of the attacking talent that the visitors possess. Backing goals to be scored looks to be the way forward and we're going to focus our attention on the hosts. Therefore, our AZ Alkmaar vs West Ham United prediction is for AZ to score over 1.5 total goals.
AZ Alkmaar vs West Ham - Other Interesting Predictions
AZ Alkmaar draw no bet
AZ Alkmaar should not be the underdogs here given how well they have performed at home in this competition. Additionally, West Ham have struggled on the road all season, losing 12 of 18 fixtures in the Premier League.
Both teams to score
West Ham have shown good goal-scoring consistency as the visiting side in this competition and have scored in every away match. With AZ in excellent goal scoring form at the moment and the first leg finishing 2-1, we should see both teams register at least a goal.
