After facing off in the same qualification group in the qualifiers, North Macedonia and Austria landed in the same pool for Euro 2020. The two will face off in their opening encounter in Group C. Austria beat North Macedonia in both matches at the qualification stage and finished second, five points ahead of North Macedonia. Going to this game, and the tournament, Austria are in a poor form, having managed one win only in their last six matches. They’ve failed to score in their last three matches, having been thrashed 4-0 by Denmark before falling 1-0 to England then finishing their preparations for this tournament with a 0-0 draw with Slovakia. Their only win in the last six matches was against lowly ranked Faroe Islands and even then, they couldn’t keep a clean sheet, as they won 3-1. They have one clean sheet in their last seven matches.

North Macedonia are one of the surprise teams in this competition. They saw off Kosovo and Georgia in the qualification playoffs and in their first ever appearance at a major tournament, they start on a very strong footing. The Euro debutants aren’t backed by many to shine at this competition but they are unbeaten in their last four matches and three of them are wins. In their last five matches, they have scored two goals or more in four and with just two losses in their last 14 matches, they will be very confident going to this clash. While they haven’t faced many big sides in their recent matches, the 2-1 win away to Germany in March is a stark reminder of the damage North Macedonia can cause. Even in their status as tournament minnows, North Macedonia have star players that should light up their Euro 2020 campaign. Veteran Goran Pandev stands out. The skipper is the most capped and also most influential player in the group. He scored the winner against Georgia to secure North Macedonia’s place at the Euros. Leeds United’s Ezgjan Alioski is another key man in the team while Eljif Elmas and Aleksandar Trajkovski will hope to extend their goal scoring performances to this tournament. The two have scored six goals in the last five matches.
