At Tokyo 2020, USWNT have lacked the flair regularly associated with them and their prospects of bagging the gold medal were quashed in the semi final loss to Canada. The 1-0 loss was the first time they fell to Canada in 20 years and they will have to battle for Bronze against Australia, who also lost 1-0, to Sweden. USA’s defeat was soured by goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher’s injury in the first half and she will miss the bronze match. USA’s poor run at this competition has seen them register just one outright win in this competition – the 6-1 win over New Zealand at the group stage. They did eliminate Netherlands on post match penalties after a 2-2 draw in the quarter finals but having one clean sheet only thus far says a lot about the team. They’ve scored eight times in the five matches, with six of those goals coming in one game and they have conceded seven goals. Three of their five matches have produced over 2.5 goals and they’ve failed to score in three of the five games.

This is the second meeting between the two nations at this competition and Australia will hope they can shock the world champions after staging an impressive defensive show at the group stage to earn a 0-0 draw. They did put up a good show against Sweden in the semis but that wasn’t enough to match the best side at this competition. A third place finish will be a great consolation for Australia but they will need to be at their best to handle a USA side hurting from the semi final loss. Just like USA, Australia have eight goals and one clean sheet at this competition. They’ve also seen three of their matches end in over 2.5 goals and failed to score in two, one lesser than USA. In three of their five matches, Australia have scored two or more goals.
