Australia W - Nigeria W: Form Analysis
Australia opened their campaign with a perfect outing, beating Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Sydney. Stephanie Catley’s 52nd minute penalty was all they needed for a good start to the competition. Now they move to Brisbane for Match Day 2, knowing a win will guarantee them a Round of 16 spot. Four times in their last five matches, Australia have won without conceding. The win over Ireland marked their third straight win and clean sheet. One thing about them is that they largely come around in the second half. In only one of their last five matches have they failed to score in. the second half. Meanwhile, each of their last five matches has had at least one second half goal. In 2015, these two nations met at the group stage, and Australia won 2-0. They will hope for a repeat of the same, seeking to advance from the group for the fifth straight time. Playing in their eighth World Cup, Australia will hope to this time better their best performance. They’ve reached the quarterfinals on three occasions – 2007, 2011 and 2015. In 2019, they were eliminated at the Round of 16 stage.
Nigeria’s only meeting with Australia before, saw them fall to Kyah Simon’s brace in 2015. They will rightly be eyeing revenge here but the bigger picture remains to try and advance from this group. Their opening game was tough, playing seventh-ranked Canada. After managing a 0-0 draw in the game, they should be very confident coming into this one. They survived a number of scares in the game, including a missed penalty and having to finish with less players. Playing in their ninth straight World Cup, Nigeria have relative experience at this stage. They are however ranked 30 places below Australia, which has them as underdogs here. Nigeria’s best performance at the World Cup was in the 1999 edition. Back then they reached the quarter finals. Heading into this game, the African nation is unbeaten in four matches, three of them wins. Three times in their last four matches, Nigeria have posted clean sheets. They’ve scored two or more twice in the last three matches. However, at the World Cup stage, they have failed to score four times in the last five matches.

Australia W & Nigeria W Squad Analysis
Arsenal left-back Stephanie Catley grabbed the headlines in the first game after scoring the only goal. Going into the second game though, the continued absence of Sam Kerr will be a major talking point. She is still not fit enough and this will be a setback for the hosts. Kyah Simon will remember facing Nigeria at the 2015 World Cup and scoring twice. After staying on the bench for the win over Ireland, she will hope to play a part here.
Nigeria will be without Deborah Abiodun for this game, after the youngster was sent off late against Canada. Goalkeeper Cynthia Nnadozie saved a penalty against Canada and should be very confident coming into this game. Asisat Oshoala will be another key player for Nigeria. She didn’t have much impact against Canada but the veteran’s quality is never in doubt.
