Champions Atletico Madrid plays host to Valencia at the Wanda Metropolitano in this La Liga Matchday 22 encounter. The hosts are in 4th position with 33 points while the visitors are in 9th position with 29 points. Atletico are having an awful season according to their high standards  and with their title defence long over they must salvage their season with a top four finish. They currently occupy the last Champions League spot but have three teams below chasing them with just two points separating all four teams. Their recent record has been very inconsistent with just two wins in their last eight matches across all competitions. Their home form in the league has been good with just one defeat all season to go with five wins and three draws. The hallmark of Atletico’s success over the years was a rock solid defence but this season they have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven league games.

Valencia will be delighted with their 1-1 draw with second placed Sevilla in their last match. The result was all the more impressive as they finished the match with 10 men. They are in ninth place but just three points separate them and Barcelona who occupy the last Europa League position. Valencia have however played an extra match. Valencia have proven very difficult to beat and have only suffered two losses in their last 14 matches with eight wins and four draws. Their record against Atletico is very poor and have not won against them in the last 14 matches with their last win coming in 2014.
