The early part of the season was a major disappointment for Atletico Madrid as they surprisingly finished behind Chelsea and Roma and failed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League. That took them into the Europa League and they are one of the favourites to lift the trophy. They will be back in the Champions League next season as Atletico are currently second in La Liga but eight poiints behind leaders Barcelona. Current form is outstanding with eight straight home wins and not a single goal conceded. This is their first time in the Europa League since 2013 and so far they have beaten Copenhagen 5-1 on aggregate in the last 32 and then demolished Lokomotiv Moscow 8-1. In both those ties they won at home but had larger victories on the road. They have just one home defeat in their last 20 in all competitions so this looks like being a tough night for their Portuguese opponents.
Sporting Lisbon also began the season campaigning in the Champions League but finished third behind Barcelona and Juventus but did well and didn't suffer any heavy defeats. So far in this competition they have beaten Astana 6-4 on aggregate in the last 32, including a crazy home second leg in which they led 3-1 after 80 minutes but drew 3-3. The last sixteen saw them go to extra time before beating Viktoria Pizen 3-2. They won the home leg 2-0 but lost by the same score away before grabbing a 105th minute winner to reach the quarter finals. Away form in Europe this season has seen two wins and three defeats and since 2012 they have won six out of 26 away European ties. Sporting are currently third in the Portuguese league, six points behind the leaders but five points behind the second Champions League place.
This looks nailed on to be a home win as Atletico are in great form particularly defensively and Sporting struggle on their travels. Go for Atletico to be ahead at both half and full time.
