A few weeks ago, all pointers indicated that Atletico Madrid would be knocked off the top of the La Liga standings but going into the final three matches of the season, they are still there despite not doing so superbly themselves. Atletico go to Match Day 36 with a first of two straight home games, against Real Sociedad. The hosts are top of the table with 77 points, two above Real Madrid and Barcelona while Real Sociedad are fifth on 56 points. Atletico need seven points from the remaining three matches to win the title, which means we are set for a great finale. They are coming from a good result, having drawn 0-0 with Barcelona, and Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla meant they stay top. They seem to be getting back to their defensive best, having managed four clean sheets in the last five matches. They’ve struggled a bit in their away matches and coming from the last two with four points, they’ll be keen to take advantage in the next two matches, at home. They have four straight wins at home in La Liga and are unbeaten in the last five. In each of their last three home matches, they have kept clean sheets.

Real Sociedad are coming from a 2-0 win over relegation threatened Elche; their third win in the last for league matches and they’ve failed to score in just one of the last five league matches. Sociedad can’t break into the top four, but will hope to finish fifth, where they are, four points ahead of Villarreal. They thus have something to play for, with Europa League an appealing reward. Sociedad have four wins and four losses in their last 10 matches. Clean sheets against the bottom two sides, Elche and Eibar are all Sociedad have in the last nine league games. Away from home in La Liga, they have three wins only in the last 12 matches and in the last seven, they’ve scored more than once in just one.
