After a strong start to the MLS season, Atlanta United will prepare to do battle with the Portland Timbers at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday and will be hoping to build on their current good form. The hosts are currently atop the MLS Eastern Conference table with seven points after three matches, level with Nashville and Cincinnati in second and third place, respectively. Atlanta won their last match 3-0 against Charlotte, maintaining their unbeaten record so far with two wins and a draw. They had a fairly underwhelming preseason, winning one, drawing two, and losing one of their four friendly matches, though they did score eleven goals over that period. With a win and a draw so far on home soil this season, Atlanta will be in good spirits coming into this one and will do everything in their power to maintain their good record. 

Portland, meanwhile, has been unable to continue their winning start to the season and come into this match off the back of two consecutive losses. After beating Sporting KC in the season opener, Portland was beaten 3-2 by Los Angeles in their second match and then suffered a 2-1 defeat to St Louis City last week. During the preseason, Portland was unbeaten in three matches, including wins over LA Galaxy and New York City on either side of a 2-2 draw against Toronto. They are currently in 8th place in the Western Conference standings with three points in as many games and will want to get back to winning ways as soon as possible, though this could prove to be a tricky match for them against a side that has started the season very well.
