Sixth-place Atlanta United host the fourth-placed Philadelphia Union for this Eastern Conference matchday 22 encounter in the MLS. These two teams will be expecting to make the playoffs and potentially make a run at the MLS Cup. Atlanta have done well as we close in on the final third of the season to greatly improve over their 2022 campaign which saw them finish 11th. The Three Stripes now hold a three point lead over both eighth and ninth-place in the standings and will be seeking to widen that gap on Sunday. Atlanta trail their opponents today by five points although the Union have a game-in-hand advantage. It’s been a strange run of form for Atlanta in the past five weeks. Five of their last seven matches have resulted in draws and they’ve managed just one win during that stretch. Atlanta’s most recent outing resulted in a heavy 4-0 away defeat to the New York Red Bulls, their first loss in the last eight fixtures. 

Philadelphia have recovered well after a tough start to the season saw them win only two of their first eight MLS matches. The Union look to be recapturing some of that excellent form which saw them finish as the Eastern Conference’s top team and MLS Cup runners-up. Jim Curtin’s men are coming off a dominant 4-1 home win over Inter Miami in their most recent fixture. Philly have now won six of their last nine including two draws and only one defeat. Their form at Subaru Park has been fantastic but the Union have struggled on their travels this season. They’ve managed only three wins from their nine trips overall, putting up a -1 goal differential compared to their stellar +15 home goal differential. The visitors will be encouraged ahead of this trip however given their strong goal scoring form. Philadelphia has now netted 17 goals in their last seven matches overall for an average of 2.43 scored per game over the past five weeks.
