Last season’s runners up ATK Mohun Bagan welcome the Kerala Blasters to the PJN Stadium in Fatorda for opening match of the 2021/22 Indian Super League. The matches are still being played in Goa behind closed doors due to Covid fears. ATK will be looking to go one better this season after finishing joint top after the league season but lost the playoffs to Mumbai City FC. They will be keen to add to their three previous titles albeit while still playing under their old name, Atlético de Kolkata. ATK will again look to their star player Roy Krishna. The 34-year-old has been the top scorer of the league for two consecutive seasons. Three titles in seven seasons of the Indian Super League is a tremendous record and ATK will start the season as the favourites once again and will be confident against Kerala Blasters having won their last two matches against them.

Kerala Blasters will want to put  last season’s nightmare behind them were they finished second to last on the table. They had a wretched end to the season failing to win any of their last seven matches. It was a huge fall from grace considering they were runners up twice in the first three years of the Indian Super League. One of their final defeats in the 2016/17 season was against their opponents in this match. They have appointed a new coach in Ivan Vukomanovic and he will want to start his rein with a victory. Their defence was a major problem last season and they have signed new defenders and hopefully that makes them more difficult to beat.
