Athletic Bilbao are smarting from two losses in the Copa Del Rey but there isn’t much time to mourn the bygones. They are set to host La Liga title chasers Atletico Madrid who have picked up well lately. Athletic Bilbao have 38 points, and are placed 10th while Atletico Madrid have 73 points at the top of the league standings. The hosts are 11 points below the Europa League slots and it is unlikely they’ll be able to get there. They are winless in the last eight matches across all competitions but five of them are draws. In La Liga action, Athletic Bilbao have drawn all their last five matches and failed to score in the last two. They aren’t big in attack; in the last 15 league matches, the hosts have scored more than a goal in just four. At home, in league matches, Athletic Bilbao have no loss in six, just two wins and four draws but with only one clean sheet.

Atletico Madrid have scored seven goals in their last two league matches as they recovered from their recent slump. They thrashed Eibar 5-0 and Huesca 2-0, both matches at home and now they are faced with a much tougher assignment as they look to gain the ground to stay ahead of the chasing pack. Despite their recent poor run, Atletico remain the best defensive side in the league, having conceded 20 goals and they seem to have found their mojo with three clean sheets in the last five league matches. Luis Suarez is still out but reports from the club indicate he is back in training. The Uruguayan international has scored 19 goals this season and Diego Simeone will want to save him for the latter stages of the season, especially with a game against Barcelona in the horizon. In Suarez’s absence, Yannick Carasco has stepped up well and has scored in each of the last three matches while Marcos Lorente and Angel Correa are also proving key. The biggest worry for Simeone going to this game will be Atletico’s away form; they’ve managed just one win in the five away league games. They haven’t won any of their last three.
