In their last outings in the Champions League, both Atalanta and Villarreal spurned chances to move closer to qualification to the second round. This time they face off in Bergamo in a Group F match neither side can afford to lose. Atalanta, the hosts, are third with six points while Villarreal are second, on seven points. Atalanta led twice against Young Boys in their last Champions League game but ended up chasing the game and were lucky to get a point in the 3-3 draw. After that game they’ve won all three and get to this game on a very good footing, having beaten both Juventus and Napoli in Serie A. They don’t keep many clean sheets, but going to this game they are unbeaten in 10, winning six. They’ve scored two or more in four of the last five matches and each of their last four home matches has produced over 2.5 goals, with both sides scoring in four of their last five at home.

Villarreal aren’t enjoying a very good run; in their last 10 matches they have just three wins, and have lost five. They head into this game after an away loss at Sevilla, their third defeat in four matches and they’ve managed just one clean sheet in their last five matches. The clean was against Victoria FC in the Copa Del Rey and they will hope for some reprieve here. In the last five matches they’ve failed to score in two and in their nine away matches this season, they’ve managed two wins and failed to score in four. Both their wins in the Champions League this season have come against Young Boys, and in three of the last five in the competition, they’ve conceded two or more goals. They’ve also scored two or more in three of their last five Champions League matches and have one clean sheet.
