Action in the Italian Cup will resume in the new year as Atalanta host Sassuolo in a round of 16 fixture. The winner of this match at the Gewiss Stadium will play the quarters against the winner of AC Milan vs Cagliari match. Atalanta are the winners of this competition way back in 1962-63 but were beaten quarter-finalists in the last two seasons. Sassuolo on the other hand, have never gone beyond quarter-finals in this competition. Atalanta as such would fancy their chances, as they come to this match with some impressive form. They have four wins from their last five matches with only one defeat in this sequence. Playing at home could add more strength as Atalanta have three wins in as many matches since the start of December, at this venue.

Sassuolo are struggling in Serie A, staying closer to the relegation zone. They went into the break with four defeats across five matches and only one draw in that run. The visitors started this competition in the round of 64 this season, winning 5-2 against Serie B club Cosenza in additional extra time. They then went on to defeat another Serie B club Spezia 5-4 via penalties. Sassuolo have already done a lot better in this season as they crashed out of the first round in this Cup last year. They would need some magical improvements to achieve progression though, having lost all six away Coppa Italia matches before that win over Cosenza earlier in this season.
