Life under new boss Dean Smith began well for Aston Villa with a home win over Swansea but away games at Norwich City and QPR both ended in defeat. Those losses have taken Villa down to 17th in the table, seven points adrift of the play-offs and only six above the relegation zone. That win over Swansea is their only win in their last seven league games but only three have been at home. Away form is a bit of a nightmare with only three points from the last seven league games and with upcoming trips to Derby, Middlesbrough and WBA, they need some home points. They have three wins, three draws and a defeat by Sheffield Wednesday at Villa Park but only one win in the last three.

Bolton Wanderers are also in trouble and they start the weekend in 19th place, two points below Villa and only four above the bottom three. They were actually in the top three earlier in the season but it's all gone wrong for them lately. Their first four league games of the season saw them earn ten points, then the next five games produced just two points. Bolton recovered slightly with a home win over Derby but the past five league games have seen them get just one point. They have just three points from their last five away league games and failed to score in three of those matches. Villa can get the home win here.
