This is the kind of game that Arsenal just can't afford to lose. They start the weekend in sixth place, eight points behind the final Champions League place and host Southampton who are 19th. The Gunners can't let that gap between them and the top four get any wider, it's already large enough. Over 90 minutes they have gone five league and cup games without a win and pressure is growing on Unai Emery. A run of two points from four league games just isn't good enough and a loss to Southampton and/or Norwich City in their next match may cause plenty of trouble for Emery. Home form has seen Arsenal without a league defeat this season. Three wins and three draws isn't going to get them in the Champions League though.

Southampton are one from bottom in the Premier League and three points from safety. That's all but four due to their appalling -18 goal difference so another relegation battle is the story of their season. The Saints have only won two league games this season, both on their travels at Brighton and Sheffield United. Their last four league games have all been lost with 16 goals conceded. Their next two games after this match are going to be crucial ones with home fixtures against Watford and Norwich City, the other two teams in the relegation zone. If this game is lost and no wins come from those relegation six-pointers, then their boss Ralph Hassenhutl might be out of a job by Christmas. Three of their last four away league games have been lost, another looks likely here. Go for Arsenal to win this match.
