Arsenal have a date with Bournemouth in the first of their preseason friendly matches in the USA, slated for Thursday. In a battle of two Premier League sides, who will emerge the best? Here’s a view of the numbers defining this match pitting the Gunners against the Cherries in California.

Arsenal came very close to clinching the Premier League title, finishing second for the second straight season. They will not be leaving anything to chance in their preparations for the next campaign. It is thus little wonder they’ve lined up top friendly matches.

Mikel Arteta’s side will also face Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen and Lyon before starting the competitive season. Back at home, they beat Leyton Orient 2-0 to start off their preseason but here the level of difficulty goes higher.

In their last nine meetings with Arsenal, Bournemouth didn’t manage a win. They lost eight times in that streak and even failed to score in three of the last four. After struggling to a 1-1 draw with Wrexham in their first friendly in the USA, the Cherries will be regarded as underdogs here.

That draw was somewhat an improvement after a run of losses in the earlier three matches. Among those losses was a 3-0 beating by Arsenal the last time they met. Quite notably, that loss to Arsenal is the only time in 14 matches that Bournemouth failed to score.

Towards the end of the past season Bournemouth were leaking at the back, only managing three clean sheets in 12 matches. As they face a side that put seven goals past them last season, Andoni Iraola will want to spend more time talking up his defenders.
