Argentinos Juniors will hope to keep their unbeaten record in Group E in the Cope Libertadores intact when they host Corinthians on Thursday. After three rounds, Argentinos are top in the group with seven points, four above third-placed Corinthians. Argentinos have won two and drawn one of their three matches and beat Corinthians away 1-0 on matchday two. A similar outcome here will secure their passage to the knockout rounds with two matches to spare. Gabriel Milito’s charges have struggled with consistency and have won only one of their last five matches. They have however proven hard to beat in this run and have suffered only one loss. This loss however came last time out as they went down 1-0 at home to Boca Juniors in the league.
Corinthians’ form coming into this match makes Argentinos’ inconsistencies seem not that bad. The Brazilian side has not won in seven straight matches with five of those fixtures ending in defeat. They have scored only four goals in this woeful run and have lost their last two matches without scoring. Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s charges lost 1-0 away to Flamengo in the Serie A. This form has them fighting relegation already. Corinthians made the quarterfinals in last season’s Copa Libertadores but could be eliminated in the group stage this season. They started their campaign on a winning note by thumping Uruguay’s Liverpool 3-0 away. But since then, they have lost their last two rounds and are three points adrift of the knockout places.
