It is time for footballers to go for gold! The Men's Olympic Football Tournament gets underway this week and one of the favourites to win it is in action early. Argentina face Morocco in the first match in Group B for both teams and our prediction is that the winner of this game will likely go on to secure top spot in the group and a place in the quarterfinals. Will it be La Albiceleste who take the win as expected, or will the Atlas Lions cause an upset?
Argentina is one of the most successful Olympic football teams. They have won the tournament twice (2004 and 2008) and finished with a silver medal on two more occasions (1928 and 1996). Former Barcelona and Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is in charge of the squad, which features goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, defender Nicolas Otamendi, and Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez as their overage trio.
With the squad comprising a majority of young, talented players from Argentina's top teams and a smattering of stars who have already moved to Europe, Argentina looks like one of the strongest squads in the tournament. They did slip up in their final warm-up fixture, losing 1-0 to Guinea on Friday, but prior to that, they had lost just one of their last 14 matches.
Tarik Sektioui has picked some talented and experienced overage players for his Moroccan U23 Olympic squad. Veteran keeper Munir Mohamedi has been joined by striker Soufiane Rahimi and Paris St Germain full back Achraf Hakimi in the squad along with a group of talented youngsters. Many of those youngsters already ply their trade abroad and the team currently holds the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations Trophy after winning it in 2023.
They drew 2-2 in their last warm-up match at home to Belgium at the start of June.
