Argentina - France: Form Analysis
When Argentina lost their opening game to Saudi Arabia, we were wondering if they'd get out of their group. Since that shock defeat, Argentina have won five games in a row, only one needing extra time. They have improved as the tournament has progressed and are a real danger to France in this World Cup final. It's not all about Messi either with Alvarez on four goals for this tournament. Either could win the Golden Boot on Sunday. Argentina have only lost once in their last 42 internationals, a run that goes back to July 2019. They're bidding to win the Copa America and World Cup just 18 months apart. Only once in their last 16 games have they failed to get on the scoresheet.
France have won five of their six matches in Qatar. The only loss was to Tunisia when a weakened line-up was fielded. None of their wins in this tournament have required extra time. They have scored at least twice in each of the matches they have won in this tournament. Mbappe is joint top scorer but he hasn't scored since the last 16. Olivier Giroud will be a major threat up front and he's scored in two of the three knockout rounds played so far. The game against Morocco was the first in which France have kept a clean sheet in this tournament, though the Africans should have scored at least once.

Argentina have a doubt over the fitness of Alejando Gomez who has an ankle problem. Angel Di Maria is also a doubt but may feature on Sunday. Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel are again available after being suspended for the semi-finals.
France have illness problems ahead of this final. Adrien Rabiot was back in the team hotel for the semi-final against Morocco and at least four other players aren't well including Dayot Upamecano. Both Rabiot and Upamecano are expected to be available for the final. Kingsley Coman is one of the others ill and he's doubtful for this match.

Argentina's power up front can win them the World Cup. They made a slow start to the tournament but have improved as the tournament has progressed. They were highly impressive in their semi-final against Croatia and have scored at least twice in their last five matches in this tournament. Messi and Alvarez are in top form and that's going to cause the defending champions plenty of problems on Sunday. They have also kept three clean sheets since that 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia.
France will do all they can to retain the World Cup. They have only lost one of their games in this tournament and that was after making several changes to their line-up. France beat England in the last eight and then Morocco in the semi-finals. Both teams created chances against France and could have won the match. Can the French team (just one clean sheet so far) hold up against the power of Messi and Alvarez. The curse on teams successfully defending the World Cup may well continue on Sunday. Our Argentina v France prediction is that Argentina can finally give Messi his World Cup glory and they can win the trophy.
