Croatia face Argentina bidding to reach a second successive World Cup final. They take on Argentina at the Lusail Stadium, hoping to return there on Sunday for the title decider. The last nation to reach two World Cup finals in a row was Brazil in 2002. It was the Brazilians who Croatia knocked out in the quarter finals of this tournament. It took a penalty shootout for them to do so and that's just how their opponents qualified too. It feels an age since Argentina lost their opening match to Saudi Arabia. Since then they have had wins over Mexico, Poland, Australia and the Netherlands. They have scored exactly two goals in each of their last four games. Lionel Messi is chasing Kylian Mbappe for the Golden Boot and has scored once in four of the five games Argentina have played in Qatar. Their quarter final win means Argentina now have just one loss in their last 41 internationals. The defeat by Saudi Arabia is the only one they've suffered since being beaten by Brazil in July 2019. Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel will miss this game. The two Argentinian fullbacks are both suspended for this match. After all the bookings in the quarter finals, Argentina will need to be careful not to incur more yellow cards or players might end up missing the final if they qualify. A tight match looks in store for us in this World Cup semi-final. Just who will take on either France or Morocco in the final? Croatia haven't achieved a massive amount since the 2018 World Cup but have made it through to the last four for a second successive tournament. Just as in 2018 they have been no strangers to games going to extra time and eventually a penalty shootout. They seem to the masters of winning closely fought World Cup games. They've only beaten Canada in 90 minutes but could the magic of Modric again see them in the final?
Argentina lost their opening game but have avoided further losses since then. They still aren't firing on all cylinders, perhaps that is being saved for the latter stages of this World Cup.
