One of the great rivalries in world football continues on Tuesday. Argentina are top of the South American World Cup qualifying group and host third-placed Brazil. The White and Sky Blues have already qualified for next year's finals. Read our match prediction below.
It always seems strange that the World Cup holders should have to begin their defence in the qualifying rounds. Argentina are six points clear at the top of the table and not since 1970 have they failed to quallfy for the finals. They are also the current Copa America champions but are without the injured Lionel Messi for these latest World Cup matches.

Argentina - Brazil: Form Analysis
Argentina won their most recent World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Uruguay last Friday. That was their ninth win in 13 qualifiers with three games lost and revenge for the home loss to Uruguay in November 2023.
The home side have won three of their last four matches, all to nil. Only two of their last 18 internationals have ended in defeat. The reverse fixture with Brazil was played in November 2023 with Argentina winning 1-0.
They are unbeaten in their last four games against Brazil with the last defeat to their great rivals being six years ago. Not since 2016 have they lost a World Cup match to Brazil and will want to extend that record.
Brazil are struggling on their travels.
Brazil have won six of their 13 qualifiers with three draws and four defeats. Only two of their six away games have been won and both were against the bottom couple of teams in the table, Peru and Chile with losses in Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia.
Their most recent qualifier saw them beat Colombia 2-1 but needed a 99th minute winner to secure the three points.

Argentina & Brazil Squad Analysis
Argentina have been hit by injuries and suspensions ahead of this World Cup match against Brazil. They were already without Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala before their game in Uruguay. Then Nico Gonzalez was sent off in that match and he's suspended for this game.
Rodrigo De Paul did not play against Uruguay but is expected to play against Brazil. If that is the case, then he will replace Leandro Paredes.
Problems in goal for Brazil.
Brazil also have some big names missing. Ederson is out injured and Neymar was also forced out due to injury. Brazil definitely have problems between the sticks as Alisson Becker has withdrawn from their squad as is Gerson of Flamengo.
Bento is expected to be Brazil's goalkeeper for this match and make only his third international appearance. The replacement for Gerson is expected to be Andre. Joelinton and Leo Ortiz are expected to come into the side to replace the suspended Bruno Guimaraes and Gabriel Magalhaes.
Brazil haven't quite confirmed their place in the finals but a draw would be a good result for them. They are likely to keep it tight as they aim to achieve that.
