The opening fixtures of the 2023 African Nations Championships have been dominated by low scores and fans will be hoping for a change when hosts Algeria take on Ethiopia on Match Day 2 in Group A. Algeria top the group on three points while Ethiopia have one point. Algeria opened with a 1-0 win over former champions Libya, and will be looking to keep their perfect start here. USM Alger forward Aimen Mahious scored the lone goal from a 57th minute penalty to hand Algeria the advantage. They will come into this game having the more superior players with Youcef Laouafi and Karim Aribi having already featured for the senior national team. However, Chouaib Debbih may miss this game after lasting just 20 minutes when he came off the bench against Libya. While Algeria have dominated their recent matches, winning three of five, they haven't been scoring a lot. Four of their last five matches have produced under 2.5 goals.

Ethiopia opened their CHAN campaign with a 0-0 draw with Mozambique. With this result, they are unbeaten in the last seven matches and have suffered just one loss in the last 10. They have however managed just three wins in their last 10 matches. Six times in the last 10 matches they’ve drawn and they come into this game having failed to score in four of their last six matches. In their last 14 matches Ethiopia have managed more than a goal in only two, a 5-0 win over a very weak South Sudan, and a surprise 2-0 win over African giants Egypt. At the same time, Ethiopia have conceded more than a goal in only one of their last 10 matches, in a 2-1 loss to Malawi in June 2022.
