Algeria - Angola: Form Analysis
Algeria are back at the continental stage for the 20th time in their history and this is their sixth successive appearance. The Desert Foxes are two-time African champions with the most recent triumph coming in 2019. In the last edition, however, they performed abysmally as the defending champions and were eliminated in the group stage. Djamel Belmadi’s men earned just one point in 2021 and finished bottom of their group. They will be eager for a better showing this time round to show why many consider them favorites for the title. Algeria haven’t lost a match in almost a year with their last defeat coming in February last year. They have won nine of the 12 matches in this period with the most recent coming last Tuesday. The North Africans thumped Burundi 4-0 in a build-up match and have now won four straight games.
Angola missed the last AFCON edition. This was the third time in the last four tournaments that they had failed to appear at Africa’s premier competition. They will hope in their return, they set a new national record. The Black Antelopes have featured in eight AFCONs in their history and only twice have they gotten out of the group stage. Both times they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. One of those times was in 2010 where they drew 0-0 with Algeria in the group stages. Angola have never lost to Algeria in the three times they have met and have won once. This should have them confident of making a positive start in Group D. Pedro Goncalves’ men have struggled to win in the run-up to this tournament and have registered just two wins in 16 outings. They however have proved difficult to beat and only three times have they been defeated in this period. Angola’s last four matches have ended 0-0 with the most recent being a build-up match against DR Congo.

Algeria & Angola Squad Analysis
Algeria have called up a star-studded side filled with players plying their trades across various leagues in Europe. Former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez captains the team and will be one of the players to watch. So too are Houssem Aouar, Baghdad Bounedjah, Sofiane Feghouli, Adam Ounas, Ismail Bennacer and Ismail Slimani.
Angola also have a large number of its players playing in Europe. Pedro Goncalves has also called up a sizeable number of players plying their trades in Angola’s domestic topflight. One of those is young forward Gilberto of Petro Luanda who has two goals in nine caps. The man to look out for more here though is Gelson Dala, formerly of Sporting Lisbon and now with Qatari side Al Wakrah.
