South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns opened their charge in the CAF Champions League with a home win over Sudanese side Al Hilal and will be gunning for another win over another Sudanese side, Al Merreikh, away from home. Sundowns lead Group A with three points and Al Merreikh will be stepping onto the pitch for the first in this group. The hosts had to negotiate their way through the preliminary rounds, beating Zambian side Zanaco 4-2 on aggregate to get their spot here. Their scoring run has been good, netting three times in three of their last four matches and they’ve also impressed defensively, keeping four clean sheets in the last five matches. It hasn’t been great in the Champions League though, with Al Merreikh posting just two wins in their last 11 matches in this competition. In Seven of 10 Champions League matches, Al Merreikh have conceded two or more goals.

Sundowns go to this game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Baroka in their domestic league, a result that ended their three-game winning run and also for the first time in four matches they conceded. In their last 10 matches, they have seven wins and just a loss. With a good lead in the PSL, Sundowns are expected to place more focus on the Champions League, which is not what Al Merreikh will want at this point in time. Only Al Ahly and Belouizdad have beaten Sundowns in their last 10 Champions League matches; they have five wins in that run and in the last two matches in this competition they have kept clean sheets. This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
