Al Ahly’s defence of the CAF Champions League isn’t going well and when they play host to Al Merreikh, they’ll know it is a must-win game. The Egyptian giants are third in Group A with one point after two matches while Al Merreikh, from Sudan have four points, in second place. Al Ahly are coming from a 4-1 win over Pharco in the Egyptian league. As they look to build on it, they will be gunning for not just the first win in the competition this season, but also the first goal. Al Ahly have three wins in five matches and have scored four times in three of their last five matches. At home, they have one loss in 24 games. In their last Champions League game, Al Ahly lost at home to Mamelodi Sundowns. That was their first loss in 13 Champions League matches and they have also lost once at home in 36 matches.

Al Merreikh beat Al Hilal 2-1 in their last Champions League game and a win in Cairo will really boost their chances for a top two finish in this group. They will be aware that Al Ahly are struggling in their title defence and having played Al Ahly last season they will have a few clues going into this game. In Group A last season, the two drew in Sudan and Al Ahly won 3-0 in Egypt. Here Al Merreikh go unbeaten in their last four matches and with three clean sheets in those four matches. This will be a different kind of challenge though and their away run in the Champions League will be a major concern. Al Merreikh haven’t won any of their last 14 away matches in the Champions League, losing 12.
